Middle School- Seventh Grade

Mr. kevin good and Mrs. Barb ryan (Literacy)

Mrs. Barb Ryan

Hello, my name is Barb Ryan, the 7th/8th grade Literacy teacher at South City Catholic Academy. I have been at South City Catholic Academy since its inception in 2017. Prior to that, I had the privilege of teaching at Our Lady of Sorrows School for seventeen years. I taught 4th, 6th and 7th grades as a homeroom teacher, coordinated the Language Arts program in grades 5-8, and prepared 7th graders for Confirmation as the 7th Religion teacher.

I am a St. Louis native, Rosati-Kain High School and Benedictine College graduate who has been married for forty-two years. My husband Mark and I raised three wonderful children and have four exceptional granddaughters and one spectacular grandson.

This next chapter in my life is an exciting challenge; as a part of SCCA, I have been working on developing the language arts curriculum to meet the current trends and best practices in education. In Literacy, I have created a modified Writers Workshop and taught it successfully in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades for the past several years. Students will graduate from SCCA with a very strong background knowledge of the English language and how to use it to communicate effectively across the curriculum and in real world situations.

My heartfelt goal as an ELA teacher is to foster a love for the written word, to educate empathetic readers, critical thinkers who navigate both news and novels with a discerning eye and appreciation for the communication skill we use every day, in so many forms—reading. I am committed to using contemporary, effective and efficient methods of teaching while focusing on the individual needs of each student. I will work closely with other teachers, the learning consultant and parents to ensure that each child is being challenged and encouraged.

SCCA presents an opportunity I am thrilled to embrace---a founding faculty member at a new school formed by the vision of its administration and teachers. I gratefully join the committed professionals whose mission is to create a school that serves, teaches and enriches students and families in the South St. Louis community!
